The aim of the Edexcel IGCSE ICT course is to introduce students to information, communication and technology and its various applications in current society.
Students will develop analytical and evaluative skills as well as skills relating to independent research of topics and these skills will allow students gain insight into a wide range of ICT applications and concepts
The IGCSE ICT course will be of interest to those wishing to progress to GCE level studies in ICT related subjects. In addition the course may be of interest to those seeking to understand ICT and apply their knowledge to practical situations or use it for entry into higher level study
Examination for this course is offered once a year in June
The course is presented over 5 units which mirror the specification and key examination questions. You must have permanent access to a computer and printer in order to undertake the course.
Each unit has an associated extended tutor marked assignment (TMA) which will provide students with feedback on general strengths and weaknesses related to core topics, guidance and direction for improvement of performance.
Unit 1: Hardware, software, memory and storage
The first unit starts by looking at the computer and processing in general terms; what are these devices and how can we use them in everyday life. The unit also looks at methods of data storage and backup

Unit 2: Word processing, desk top publishing and spreadsheets
Word processing is perhaps the most common tool of computing – this unit explores word processing and formatting concepts and also explores desk top publishing in terms of enhancing documents and modelling

Unit 3: Databases, graphics and presentation software
In this unit database creating is explained and explored together with looking at a variety of data storage methods. In addition the unit provides opportunity to look at video and audio editing software components and uses.

Unit 4: Communications, networking and the internet
Using ICT for communication is part of modern life. This unit explores networks, networking and how these tools are used within different contexts including social networking

Unit 5: Applications and the examination
The final unit explores concepts and processes related to web authoring and data capture. In addition there is a dedicated section to help students prepare for the examination
