Introduction

Oxford College is pleased to offer the Edexcel International GCSE in Religious Studies.

This course will provide you with the opportunity to experience Religious Studies and is designed to provide a basis for progression to further study in GCE Advanced Subsidiary and Advanced Level Religious Studies.

This course offers you the opportunity to explore a wide range of religious, philosophical and ethical issues. The course offers opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of these issues, and to express their own ideas and opinions when evaluating the views of others.

The Edexcel International GCSE in Religious Studies qualification enables students to;

  • Acquire knowledge and develop understanding of religious beliefs, values and traditions, through the study of one or more of the six major world religions.
  • Acquire knowledge and develop understanding of key religious ideas which are not specific to any one religion, and of non-religious beliefs and values.
  • Consider the influence of religious beliefs, values and traditions and of non-religious beliefs and values.
  • Consider religious and non-religious responses to ethical issues.
  • Identify, investigate and respond to fundamental questions of life raised by religion and human experience, including questions about the meaning and purpose of life.
  • Develop skills relevant to the study of religion.

This course consists of five units:

Unit 1: The universe, human beings and their destiny
Unit 2: Ultimate reality and the meaning of life
Unit 3: Relationships, families and children
Unit 4: Rights, equality and responsibilities

Unit 5A: Christianity & Judaism

OR
Unit 5B:  Islam & Hinduism 

Depending on your preference choose one option for Unit 5.

Each unit is divided into topic areas that follow the wider scope of the syllabus and ensure that ‘bite size’ learning and guidance is given. Each unit is supported by short ‘self-tests’ that aid you to absorb the learning materials and while doing so, prepare a revision strategy for the examination. 

The ‘Self Tests’ will not be part of tutor marking, but, will assist the student in ensuring that they have absorb the information from that unit’s content.

  • Selfishness, greed, ignorance and sin
  • Free will, determinism and predestination
  • Death and life after death


Unit 2: Ultimate reality and the meaning of life

  • Ultimate reality
  • The meaning of life
  • Belief, doubt and unbelief
  • The problem of evil and suffering
  • Sanctity of life, euthanasia and abortion


Unit 3: Relationships, families and children

  • Human relationships
  • Marriage and partnership
  • Divorce and remarriage
  • Family structures and responsibilities
  • Childlessness and celibacy


Unit 4: Rights, equality and responsibilities

  • Human rights
  • Equal rights and equal opportunities
  • The multi-ethnic society and racial harmony
  • The multi-faith society and interfaith relationships
  • Relationships between rich and poor.

Unit 5a/b: Study of The Religious Community is divided into the following five aspects:

 

  • Religious texts and sources of authority
  • Founders and leaders
  • Rules for living
  • Worship and celebration
  • Places of worship and pilgrimage.

By the end of the Edexcel International GCSE you will have begun to successfully investigate key areas of Religious Studies and be prepared for further progression in this and related fields.

The format of the Examinations

PLEASE NOTE: All exams will be held during the May - June exam period.

Paper 1: Religious Studies Paper code: 4RSO/01

  • Externally assessed
  • Availability: June series
  • First assessment: June 2011

Overview of content:

  • Part 1: Beliefs and Values
  • Part 2: The Religious Community

Overview of assessment:

One examination paper lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Students answer one question from each of the four sections in Part 1, and any two questions from Part 2.

Part 1: Beliefs and Values comprises 62% of the examination.

Students answer one question from each of the four sections.

There are 20 marks available for each question. Students should spend approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on Part 1.

Part 2: The Religious Community comprises 38% of the examination.

Students answer any two questions from a choice of 18.

There are 25 marks available for each question. Students should spend approximately 1 hour on Part 2.

The total mark for the paper is 130.

Overview of assessment

  • This qualification is assessed through an examination paper lasting two hours and
  • 30 minutes, set and marked by Edexcel.
  • Single tier of entry.
  • The total number of marks available is 120.

Entry Requirements

Students are not required to have completed any courses prior to enrolling on an IGCSE course. Due to the nature of the learning process and the exam format, a good standard of written English is required.

Study Hours

Variable according to student commitment, though Edexcel recommend 120-140 guided learning hours.

Suggested plan of study for learning

Examinations are held each year.

If you begin studying for this course in the month of September you will have approximately 9 months of study, or 32-36 weeks of study.
