Oxford College is pleased to offer the Edexcel A Level in Government and Politics.

Government and Politics is a dynamic subject which deals with contemporary issues and debates. An interest in current affairs will greatly assist you as you study the materials contained within this course.

In studying the Government and Politics course you are encouraged to;

  • Develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes.
  • Acquire knowledge and understanding of the structures of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom, and how these may differ from those of other political systems.
  • Acquire knowledge and informed understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the individual and encourage an interest in, and engagement with contemporary politics.

This course has its’ focus on the government and politics of Britain and Europe. At AS Level the focus is on learning about key British political institutions and organisations, while A2 develops key political issues and links British politics in with the increasingly significant European Union.

The AS and A2 modules link together and assessment is all done by examination.

There is no coursework option in this course.

This course consists of four units:

  • Unit 3A – UK Political Issues
  • Unit 4A – EU Political Issues

The A2 Units

Unit 3A – UK Political Issues

Topics/Modules included on Unit Three:

  • Economic Policy
  • Social Welfare, Health and Education
  • Law, Order and Criminal Justice
  • Environmental Policy

This topic looks at key policy issues in the UK, particularly those that have affected the outcomes of general elections or stimulated public debate.

Unit 4A – EU Political Issues

Topics/Modules included on Unit Four:

  • Impact of the EU on the UK
  • European Integration
  • EU Institutions and Their Relationships
  • Domestic Policy Issues

This topic examines the political issues that have arisen as a result of the process of European integration, and the impact of the EU on the UK. It also looks at European institutions and their interrelationships and the European economic and social model.

By the end of the A Level you will have begun to successfully investigate key areas of Government and Politics and the importance of rule by government in modern society.  By the end of the full A level you will have also investigated several key topic areas in much greater detail and practised some of the research skills that are so necessary to success not only in this field but in other interrelated fields.

The format of the Examinations

PLEASE NOTE: All exams will be held during the May - June exam period.

Unit 3: Key Themes in Political Analysis
A2 Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes
You must take one topic. For each topic students are required to answer three short answer questions from a choice of five (15 marks each).
Students are then required to answer one essay question from a choice of three (45 marks).
90 marks

Unit 4: Extended Themes in Political Analysis
A2 Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes
You must take one topic. For each topic students are required to answer three short answer questions from a choice of five (15 marks each).
Students are then required to answer one essay question from a choice of three (45 marks).
90 marks

Your course is delivered online via the Oxford Learning On Campus website.

January 2013 will be the last January exam period. All future exams will be held during the May - June exam period only.

In the student 'On Campus' area you are also able to take part in the student chat room and forums as part of our online student community.

After enrolling online you will receive your username and password to access the On Campus area within 3 working days.

Students are required to arrange and pay for their examinations and manage the course work element if the subject requires this. Students must check the relevant examination board website for further information and final examination sitting dates for the specification.
