Oxford College is pleased to offer the AQA AS Level in Environmental Studies.

The course will address the relationship between environments and the processes that control and affect the environment upon which we all depend.

By studying Environmental Studies you will be able to develop, use and apply your knowledge developed to:

  • gain a deep and well-informed insight into the environment, and the scientific processes that control and affect it.
  • understand how different events and cycles within the environment interrelate
  • understand how they influence subsequent environmental events
  • select, interpret, analyse and evaluate information to construct reasoned and coherent arguments, make decisions, propose alternative solutions and form conclusions.

This A2 course consists of two units:

  • Unit 3 – ENVS3: Energy Resources and Environmental Pollution
  • Unit 4 – ENVS4: Biological Resources and Sustainability

The A2  Units

Unit 3 – ENVS: Energy Resources and Environmental Pollution

In this unit the materials will help you to will help you to explore and respond to the following key topic areas;

  • Energy (including energy use and the environmental impact)
  • Pollution (and the environmental impact)
  • Practical Skills

These topic areas examine the crucial areas of energy acquisition and environmental impact as well as the different kinds of energy sources.  Here we also examine the different kinds of pollution and the impact these different kinds of pollution have.

Unit 4 – ENVS4: Biological Resources and Sustainability

In this final unit of the course you will explore the following key topic areas;

  • Human populations
  • Food Production Systems
  • Aquatic Food Production Systems
  • Forestry
  • Practical Skills

By exploring these key areas you will explore some of the resources available to human beings and consider the use and sustainability of these resources.

 

The format of the Examinations

PLEASE NOTE: All exams will be held during the May - June exam period.

A2 Units ENVS3 and ENVS4

Unit 3 – ENVS: Energy Resources and Environmental Pollution

25% of full A Level

Written paper, 1 hour 30 minutes

80 marks

This unit comprises seven compulsory short answer/structured/comprehension questions (60 marks) and one essay from a choice of three titles (20 marks). Includes synoptic assessment.


Unit 4 – ENVS4: Biological Resources and Sustainability

25% of full A Level

Written paper, 2 hours

80 marks

This unit comprises five compulsory short answer/structured/comprehension questions (45 marks), one compulsory data analysis question (15 marks) and one essay from a choice of three titles (20 marks). Includes synoptic assessment.

Your course is delivered online via the Oxford Learning On Campus website.

January 2013 will be the last January exam period. All future exams will be held during the May - June exam period only.

In the student 'On Campus' area you are also able to take part in the student chat room and forums as part of our online student community.

After enrolling online you will receive your username and password to access the On Campus area within 3 working days.

Students are required to arrange and pay for their examinations and manage the course work element if the subject requires this. Students must check the relevant examination board website for further information and final examination sitting dates for the specification.
